LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan on Friday called upon the Union Parishad (UP) chairmen to play an effective role in implementing the present government's poverty reduction programme.

He said the active cooperation of UP chairmen would help the government a lot to implement this programme for desired development at the grassroots level.

The Minister made the call while inaugurating a three-day "Union Parishad Administrative Appraisal Course" at Zila Parishad conference room here. Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Firoz Salahuddin was in the chair.

The function was also addressed by Director General of NILG Azizur Rahman, Secretary General of the Union Parishad Chairmen Samity Abul Haris Rikabder and the Samity's Narshingdi district unit President Aftab Uddin Bhuiyan.

Mannan Bhuiyan said the present government has revived the past glories of UP chairmen side by side with increasing their capacity in the Union Parishad activities.

"The government has been constructing UP buildings across the country and has already provided Taka 200,000 as grants to each Union Parishad," he said.

The Minister called upon the UP chairmen to play their due role in stopping dowry and child marriages in their respective areas.
